The DEETS: Billy Joel was born in the Bronx and raised in Levittown (now Hicksville) on Long Island, the Jewish son of a classical pianist who escaped the Nazi regime in Germany. At his mother’s insistence, he began piano lessons at an early age; it’s a good thing she forced the issue, because in high school he began playing at local piano bars to help her make ends meet. Joel’s dedication to music came at the expense of his formal education, as he wasn’t allowed to graduate with his class after missing a crucial exam the day after a late-night piano gig. In 1965, Joel joined a British cover band called The Echoes and spend the next two years recording and touring with them. In 1969, he won a recording contract with Family Records and released his debut solo album, Cold Spring Harbor. The album included hits like “She’s Got a Way” and “Everybody Loves You Now.” Joel moved to LA shortly thereafter and concentrated on writing songs for other artists. Everything would change for him when Columbia Records produced his breakthrough album, Piano Man, in 1973.
