The DEETS: Tanya Tucker had her first country hit at 13 years old with “Delta Dawn.” The single peaked at No. 6 on the country charts, and her next two songs, “Love’s the Answer” and “What’s Your Mama’s Name,” also made the top 10, with the latter becoming Tucker’s first No. 1. She followed this early success with two more No. 1 songs, marking the beginning of a series of hit singles throughout the 1970s. Especially notable was “Lizzie and the Rainman,” which as well as being a No. 1 country hit reached No. 37 on the pop charts and No. 10 on the adult contemporary charts. Tanya Tucker’s 1978 album T.N.T. marked a crossover into rock music. It went gold and spawned the hit “Texas (When I Die).”
Tucker sustained her popularity throughout the 1980s, with hits of that era including “Feel Right,” “One Love at a Time,” “If It Don’t Come Easy” and “Strong Enough to Bend.” Her 1986 album Girls Like Me featured four top 10 country singles. In the late 1980s, Tucker’s sound headed in a pop-tinged direction that proved a success, giving her eight top 10 country hits in a row from 1988 to 1989. She also had eight consecutive singles reach the top 10 in the early 1990s, including “Down to My Last Teardrop” and “Two Sparrows in a Hurricane.”
In 2002, Tanya Tucker founded her own label, Tuckertime Records, and released her 31st album, Tanya. It featured guest vocals by Vince Gill and is considered her most personal album to date. In 2009, Tucker released My Turn, a collection of classic country covers that reached No. 27 on Billboard country charts.
